As we welcome 2023, naturally we all look at where we are in life: how far we’ve come and our achievements, as well as choosing personal goals to enhance our lifestyle and improve our future.
New Year Resolutions can have mixed feelings attached to them, and although we shouldn’t pin too much on the specifics, there’s a lot we can implement now to help our future selves.
A healthy lifestyle is important for your mind and body but also for those around you. It shows you’re doing everything you can to improve your habits, reduce any medical risks and ensure you’ll be around for whatever the future brings. Here at Nene Legal, we wanted to share some of our own healthy lifestyles changes you could start with:
Find an Exercise You Enjoy
According to NHS guidelines, adults should exercise for around 150 minutes a week along with 2 strengthening routines. Increasing your physical activity has been proven to lose weight and build muscle and joint strength – all of which influence your mood, energy levels and mental health.
Drink More Water
This is an easy healthy lifestyle tip but one we often forget. We should be drinking between 2-3 litres of water a day to soak up its wonderful health benefits such as:
- Increased brain function
- Improved energy levels
- Better hydration
- Clearer skin
- Helping with weight control
Remember, Everything in Moderation
We’re not just referring to food here. When it comes to making healthy lifestyle changes you should consider the whole picture. But you also need to ensure these changes are achievable. Creating too many or impracticable goals can be deflating if you don’t see any benefits from them. Remember to enjoy the process and discover what works best for you.
Setup a Solid Sleep Routine
Everything stems from a good night’s sleep. When you snooze for the recommended 8 hours, you’ll notice higher energy levels and reduced anxiety. We understand that with different lifestyles, a set routine isn’t always possible. But where you can try to:
- Stop drinking caffeine 2-4 hours before sleep
- No screens (TV, phones, laptops) after 9pm
- Read a book
- Listen to music or podcast
- Keep your room cool, dark and quiet
Avoid Social Media
Speaking of screens, tearing your eyes away from your social media platforms is the best thing for you. With the digital revolution, there aren’t many jobs that don’t involve using screens, zoom calls or social media in some way, so it’s important to take time away from it outside your 9-5.
Although we all crave that quick dopamine kick, social media can contribute to several negative traits such as social isolation, jealousy, anxiety and depression. Give yourself a limit on screen time and call or meet up with friends or family instead.
Socialise with the Right People
Humans are social beings, we’re meant to talk, laugh and be in the presence of others. Furthermore, surrounding yourself with people with a similar mindset to you enhances growth, provides inspiration and helps you reach your goals in life, business, finance, everything! Look at what you want to achieve this year and find those who will support you along the way.

Try Something Different
Life isn’t just about moving through the day-to-day. It should be fun, and you’re never too old to give something a go! There are also so many health benefits to moving outside your comfort zone: a new hobby keeps your brain and body active, allows you to use new muscles and skills, and provides the chance to meet new people, decreasing loneliness and isolation.
Don’t Be So Harsh on Yourself
We always talk about being kind to others but as air stewards would advise before flying, you must put your mask on before helping others. By taking care of yourself, you can always present the best possible version of yourself in any situation. Take some time and see how far you’ve come too. Perhaps you’ve started your own business, you’re earning enough to support your family, you’ve rescued a pet or purchased your first home. You’ve accomplished so much, all of which you should look at protecting by writing a Will.
